Chapter Eleven

My first impulse was to call Darren and tell him the great news. Thankfully I stopped myself. I'm one of those people capable of drunk dialing even when I've been drinking nothing but coke. So, yeah, I've trained myself to think first. That's part of the cautious nature my sister loves to tease me about.

Laney was the second person I thought about calling. But I stopped myself there because I didn't want to get her all happy and hoping and find out the bowls were worthless. That would only add to her stress.

Anxiety makes me want to do something, talk to someone, hash it out. Finally, I found one person in my small inventory that probably could help a little.

Judge Whitener would have to tell me how a sale of a big asset would have to go down

with Daddy incapacitated. There'd probably have to be a 'ruling' of some sort so that Laney and I could apply the money to the estate's debt and stop the foreclosure proceedings.

The biggest hurdle was that none of us knew when the final proceeding of the foreclosure would be. Theoretically, it could be months down the road. But, there wasn't a guarantee of that.

The Judge told me that once in a while a bank will move on a property without any real warning.

Not often, but enough to make me nervous as hell.

"Well, Sugah," Judge Whitener drawled, "I do hope these tea cups turn out to be the real thing. How anyone would want to pay that kind of money for knick-knacks is beyond this old fool."

"I hear you, Judge. I'm not much of a clutter person myself."

"You're right, of course, in assumin' that we're going to need a little time for your Daddy to be declared unfit and get you girls powers of attorney."

"I hate the term 'unfit'."

"Sorry, darlin'." The Judge shifted his mass behind the desk. "We'll try for the best."

"Is there someone we could appeal to about the foreclosure? I mean based on this discovery."

"I've never heard of a bank slowing anything down based on a hunch."

"Oh c'mon Judge! It's more than a hunch. What if the antiques people were to give me a letter or something?"

"Everything has to proceed in a logical order here, Sarah. First, we have to see what the cups will fetch. From what you've told me, that can be accomplished pretty quick."

"That's what they told me."

"The bid would depend on the authentication of the value of the dishes."

"They're a little bit more than dishes, Judge. They're important historical artifacts."

"Until somebody important says they are and somebody rich buys 'em, they're still dishes to me."

"While all that is going on, we can work on getting the papers for Daddy, right?"

"I'll get Grayson Soul to working on it."

"Can't you handle it yourself, Judge Whitener? I really don't want Grayson or any other lawyer in town involved right now if I can help it." Especially not Grayson. Darren's oldest brother was a good lawyer, I'm sure, but it hit too close to home.
